Chapter 14

There were times, like today, when Angelo hated summer and the extended hours of daylight. The longer it was light outside, the more he felt like he should continue working, which was why it was nine, and he was just leaving the worksite.

The waterfall and river feature the mayor insisted on was coming along nicely. His men had managed to get the area dug up and graded. Rocks had been placed in various locations to create a babbling effect. They had even managed to line the entire opening with rocks to prevent anyone from accidentally falling in.

Tomorrow they would work on the actual waterfall. For that, they would need Jake. The man had an uncanny knack to see the large rocks that would create the feature and know just where to place them to make the entire thing structurally sound so it didn’t collapse.

But that was tomorrow. Tonight he needed to stop by the salon and see what got accomplished. He’d hated having to tell Kit he couldn’t make it that night, but if he was ever going to get the city hall project done he needed to spend extra time there.

He was a bit surprised to see several cars still parked near the salon and the lights inside on. He’d figured everyone would have gone home by then. Already feeling lighter that he and Kit had such good friends, Angelo found a parking spot a short distance away.

The moment he stepped out of his car he could hear the thumping beat of the music coming from the salon. Opening the front door he was hit with a wave of sound as the music competed with several raised voices.

Angelo was stunned with how much progress had been made. All the stylists’ stations had been put together and from the looks of it, wired. Even the front counter was in place. He couldn’t see the back area, but based on the front it most likely was done, too.

No one noticed him as they all stood around at least a dozen flooring samples along with several paint samples arguing about design. Angelo expected Jesse and Ethan to have very strong opinions, but he had to admit to being surprised to find Jax and Bram with the strongest ideas.

“I’m telling you, green is Angelo’s favorite color.” Angelo was shocked to realize Jake and Brent were there. At least that explained how the place looked done. His friends were fast when it came to getting projects completed.

He wasn’t sure what everyone was doing looking at samples. The floors were already in, as was the paint. “Anyone want to explain what’s going on here?”

Kit’s head popped up from the center of the group. The smile that covered the man’s face made Angelo forget about his frustrating day. With that one smile, he was suddenly happy, or at least he would be once he could get to Kit and give him a proper kiss.

“We’re picking out colors for the apartment.” Kit wove through the mass of bodies and threw himself into Angelo’s arms, where he belonged.
